Do Well Be Well with Hypertension starts Feb. 14

Methodist Hospital South is partnering again with the Wesley Nurses and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension to offer a new education series called Do Well Be Well with Hypertension. Come and learn how to control your hypertension.

This four-part series is set for Friday, Feb. 14; Feb. 21, Feb. 28 and March 6. The sessions are 12-1 p.m. at the Methodist Hospital South Community Room in Jourdanton.

The sessions are free and lunch is provided. Those interested in attending are asked to call (830) 569-0034 to register to ensure there are enough materials.

Senior Day on Feb. 17

Local senior citizens (age 50 or older) are invited to the next Senior Fun Day on Monday, Feb. 17. The activity will be Tailgate Games, followed by Left, Right, Center Game on Feb. 24.

The weekly Senior Days are free and sponsored by the Pleasanton Parks and Recreation Department and the Pleasanton Express. The events are hosted by Dana Selby and generally held at 10 a.m.

Free line-dancing

As part of the American Legion’s campaign “Let’s Get Moving Atascosa,” they will host free line-dancing classes every Tuesday. Join in on the fun 6-7:30 p.m. at the American Legion, 1404 Zanderson Ave. in Jourdanton (Highway 16, near the car wash).

The event is open to the public, so get your boots on and come on out.

Please note they are not professional dancers. If there are any professionals out there, the legion post would love to have you join them at this fun event.

February activities at the Pleasanton Library

Join the Pleasanton Public Library on Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. for the Valentine Chocolate Recipe Swap. Please bring a sample of your favorite chocolate recipe to share and a copy of the recipe for the library’s cookbook.

Cupid’s 5K & 1 Mile Heart Walk in Poteet

Run and walk for a strong heart and healthier mind, as the Tri-City Road Warriors hold their Cupid’s 5K and 1 Mile Heart Walk on Saturday, Feb. 15. The event will take place at the Poteet Strawberry Festival grounds. Start time is 7:30 a.m. for the 1 Mile Heart Walk, while the Cupid’s 5K will start at 8 a.m.

Registration cost is $14 for ages 10-80 and older and $12 for children ages 5-9.

Active Shooter Response Training Feb. 20

The office of Constable Mike Mares, Atascosa County Precinct 1, cordially invites you to attend Active Shooter Response Training which will be held at St. Andrew Catholic Church Parish Hall. The seminar will be on Feb. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The church is located at 626 Market St. in Pleasanton. Instructor will be Deputy Chief Harry Jimenez.

Participants will learn about disaster response; how to prepare for and respond to being trapped inside a building during an active shooter event; and steps they can take to assist responding law enforcement and to limit casualties. The training is free of charge and open to the public.

Frank Leal Benefit

Retired Poteet PD Lt. Frank Leal who served this community for 34 years is battling cancer.

The Poteet Police Officer’s Association is selling raffle tickets with 100% of the funds going to Frank and his family. (Total of $4,500 in prizes. Need not be present to win.)

A benefit is set for Saturday, Feb. 22, from 1-3 p.m. at Poteet Music Pavilion. There will be a dinner with hamburger, chips and soda combo for sale and dessert for sale, too. There will also be a Silent Auction.

Tickets for the raffle are $25 each or five for $100. Prizes include a sevenday trip to Las Vegas (hotel+airfare), a Glock 43 handgun, a $600 gift certificate to VR Outfitters, a custom made BBQ pit and more. Limited number of tickets available until sold out.

All proceeds will go towards relief of medical bills accrued for cancer treatments.

Homer Garcia Benefit

A fundraiser for Homer Garcia is set for Saturday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church Parish Hall. Garcia was a Firefighter/Assistant Chief for the Campbellton Fire Department and active for 30 years. His amazing family and friends are helping to make this possible.

The plates will consist of BBQ leg quarters with sausage, beans, potato salad, bread, pickles, onions, BBQ sauce and a drink for $10 a plate. There will also be a bake sale and raffle. Raffle tickets are $2 a ticket, or a book of five for $10.

Sophisticated Spaghetti Plate Sale

On Saturday, Feb. 22, the Pleasanton High School BPA will sponsor a Sophisticated Spaghetti Plate Sale. Stop by for a meal including spaghetti, green beans and garlic bread for $7. Serving is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pick up only in front of Pleasanton High School. Baked goods will also be available for purchase.

FBC Jourdanton Food Pantry on Feb. 22

First Baptist Church of Jourdanton’s Food Pantry date for February has been changed to Saturday, Feb. 22. They generally begin distribution at 9 a.m., which is limited to 90 families.

Polar Bear Plunge on Feb. 22 at Pleasanton Pool

The Pleasanton Parks and Recreation and the Pleasanton Volunteer Fire Department are teaming up for the first Polar Bear Plunge at the Pleasanton City Pool on Saturday, Feb. 22.

On-site registration will be at 5 p.m. with the plunge taking place at 6 p.m. Please note that you may take the plunge with any donation amount.

Parks and Rec and Pleasanton VFD are challenging local organizations to pledge as a group and take the plunge together! In addition to the winter water, there will be ice added to the pool to make the water a little extra chilly.

After all pledgers complete their plunge, there will be a Splash Bash with s’mores, coffee, hot cocoa and activities to continue on the fun.

All proceeds benefit Pleasanton VFD and will be presented in the form of a check after all donations are made. All donations are welcome and can be dropped off at the Pleasanton Civic Center.

Food Pantry in Poteet

Our Daily Bread Food Pantry at First Baptist Church in Poteet will be open Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 9-11 a.m. The church is located at 437 Ave. D in Poteet.

Daddy Daughter Dance on Feb. 28

Children Matter Family Life Center is hosting its first fundraising event on Friday, Feb. 28.

Come and dance the night away at the Daddy Daughter Dance, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Jourdanton Community Center. Attire is dressy. Bring your favorite girl (or girls) and make some priceless memories together. Targeted ages are 4-12.
