Dyslexia Parent Training Jan. 16 at PISD

Parents are invited to please join Pleasanton ISD as they host Dyslexia Parent Training on Thursday, Jan. 16. The session will take place from 6-7 p.m. at the Pleasanton ISD Training Center, 1280 Jolly St., next door to Pleasanton Junior High School.

In this training you will learn from Education Service Center Region 20’s dyslexia specialist what dyslexia is and how to support your child if he or she has been identified with dyslexia.

They will explore the common risk factors for dyslexia as well as common myths about dyslexia. Participants will learn strategies to help support their child if he or she is at-risk for or identified with dyslexia. While some of the strategies will target beginning literacy skills, this is appropriate for parents with students of all ages.

Join them for a learning experience and refreshments. Everyone is welcome!

Free GSA Procurement Workshop on Jan. 16

The City of Pleasanton will hold a General Service Administration (GSA) Procurement Workshop on Thursday, Jan. 16, from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. at Coastal Bend College in Pleasanton.

The Pleasanton-GSA Procurement Workshop is free and open to any person or small business that would like to do business with the federal government. The workshop will feature: GSA registration, GSA procurement process, bidding process, forecasting bidding opportunities, and bid updates.

By federal law, the government sets aside billions in procurement opportunities for businesses owned by: veterans, women, minorities and designated small businesses.

Senior Day Jan. 27

Senior Fun Day will not be held Jan. 20, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but will resume Jan. 27 with card games, Uno and 31.

Local senior citizens (50 or older) are invited to the weekly Senior Fun Days held Mondays at the Pleasanton Civic Center. Senior Days are free and sponsored by the Pleasanton Parks and Recreation Department and the Pleasanton Express. The events are hosted by Dana Selby and generally held at 10 a.m.

Free line-dancing

As part of the American Legion’s campaign “Let’s Get Moving Atascosa,” they will host free linedancing classes every Tuesday. Join in on the fun 6-7:30 p.m. at the American Legion, 1404 Zanderson Ave. in Jourdanton (Highway 16, near the car wash).

The event is open to the public, so get your boots on and come on out.

Please note they are not professional dancers. If there are any professionals out there, the legion post would love to have you join them at this fun event.

Charlotte Public Library programs underway

Winter programs at the Charlotte Public Library began Jan. 14 and continue through March 6. Please note there will not be any programs offered on Mondays.

Tuesday: Pre-Kinder: Wild and Wooly Club, 2:45- 3:15 p.m.

Wednesday: Coding Club, boys and girls 4th- 6th grade, 3:45-4:30 p.m.

Thursday: Tiny Trojans Storytime, 10-10:30 a.m.

Thursday: K-3rd grade: Wild and Wooly Club, 3:45- 4:15 p.m.

Friday: Teens, 13 and up: Teen Manga and Anime Club, 3:45-4:30 p.m.

All programs are free of charge, unless otherwise specified.

Godly Woman conference January 24-25

Whether you are a mom, a single lady, a married woman or a grandmother you don’t want to miss out on the women’s conference at Cowboy Fellowship on Jan. 24 and 25.

“A Godly Woman: Abiding in Him” is the theme of the 7th annual conference. Praise and worship time will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24 and the event will end on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25.

Heidi Reizner will be the keynote speaker. Attendees can expect to be truly blessed by her teachings throughout the weekend.

Small group breakouts will follow the general sessions on Saturday. Participants can choose sessions focused on The Fruits of the Spirit including Patience, Joy, Peace, Kindness, Faithfulness, Goodness, Gentleness, Self-Control and Love.

Registration for Friday only is $30 and is $59 for the entire conference. Registration fee covers all costs for the conference including lunch on Saturday.

GriefShare at Cowboy Fellowship starts Jan. 26

Cowboy Fellowship will start their GriefShare program at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26.

GriefShare is a support group that meets weekly. You will find a warm, caring environment and will come to see the group as an oasis on your long journey through grief. There are three key parts of the GriefShare experience: video seminar, support group and workbook.

You are welcome to begin attending the GriefShare group at any point. Each session is “self-contained” so you do not have to attend in sequence.

Country dance to raise scholarship funds Feb. 1

Dance to the music of Brad Jenschke and Neon Ranch Band, all for a good cause!

On Saturday, Feb. 1, Atascosa American Legion Post 436 in Jourdanton will host the band for their first ever Classic Country Dance from 8 p.m. to midnight. Proceeds will be used to establish scholarship funds for all Atascosa County youth and support local veterans.

Admission is $10 at the gate. Admission for Active Duty Military with ID is $5.

BYOB, no glass containers. Concession stand available for food and set-ups. Ice chests limited to 12 can capacity. No sodas or food allowed in ice chests, as there will be a concession stand on the premises.
