Vote for Cowboy Homecoming Queen Aug. 30-31

The Pleasanton Cowboy Homecoming celebration will take place Sept. 13 and 14, at the River Park.

Voting for the next Cowboy Homecoming Queen will be at the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce, located at 605 2nd Street, on Thursday, Aug. 29, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 30 and Saturday, Aug. 31, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Students and ISD staff may vote Friday, Aug. 30 at school during A and B lunch.

To vote you must live in Pleasanton ISD and be in ninth grade or older. You must have a valid ID or proof you live in the district. PISD teachers and PISD students who live outside the district can vote with proper school ID.

Break the Silence on Aug. 31 in Poteet

Mark your calendar for Saturday, Aug. 31, for “Break the Silence,” an anti bullying/suicide event at Poteet Music Pavilion Grill. The venue is located at 9125 N. State Hwy. 16 in Poteet, next to the festival grounds.

The free event will help bring awareness to bullying and suicide. It will feature live music and a concert, free giveaways, puppet show, prayer and more. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Vertical Praise will be leading worship and Pastor Juan Florez of Hosanna Baptist Church will share a word on this night. Others scheduled to appear include TD Lopez, Matt Cruz, Piri Marrero, Kurtis Hoppie and more.

Bring your family, friends and co-workers to this community outreach event.

St. Ignatius Picnic Sept. 1

Head on over to St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Christine on Sunday, Sept. 1, for their Annual Church Picnic!

The fun-filled event will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the plate sale. Delicious brisket and sausage dinner with all the trimmings will be sold for $10 per plate. Serving will take place at the air-conditioned church pavilion.

The auction will get underway at 12:30 p.m. in the air-conditioned church pavilion. Try your luck at bingo, which starts at 1 p.m.

There will also be a concession stand available, kid’s games, a thrift store and raffle drawing. Other activities include a Team Washer Tournament and Team Horseshoe Tournament. Each tourney has a registration fee of $20.

Sunday will also feature the Ranch Rodeo with books opening at 4 p.m. and draw at 5 p.m. Enter four man team at $600 per team- cash only. Buckles are guaranteed for the first place team. Los Nuevos Granisos will perform at the free dance.

No Senior Days Sept. 2

Senior Fun Days will not be held on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2.

Senior Days are sponsored by the Pleasanton Parks and Recreation Department and the Pleasanton Express and hosted by Dana Selby.

Local senior citizens (50 or older) are invited to the weekly Senior Days at the Pleasanton Civic Center each Monday. Events begin at 10 a.m. and are free.

Breast cancer benefit for Cindy Carter Sept. 7

Plowing Over Cancer, a breast cancer benefit for Cindy Carter, is set for Saturday, Sept. 7 at Strawberry Pines in Poteet. The venue is located at 1287 FM 476 West in Poteet.

From 5:30-7:30 p.m. there will be a drivethrough plate sale. From 7:30 p.m.-midnight there will be a sit down dinner with the same offerings, dance, live and silent auction and a dessert auction. Bring your dancing boots and dance the night away to South Texas Rainmakers .

There are raffles for a gun drawing ( must be over 21-years-old) and a Yeti cooler as well. Tickets will be available at the event.

GriefShare to begin

Cowboy Fellowship will start their GriefShare program at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 8.

GriefShare is a support group that meets weekly. You will find a warm, caring environment and will come to see the group as an oasis on your long journey through grief. You are welcome to begin attending the GriefShare group at any point. Each session is “self-contained” so you do not have to attend in sequence.

Atascosa County to commemorate 9/11

Atascosa County will once again hold a ceremony on Sept. 11 to remember the tragic events of 18 years ago. There will be guest speakers from all over Atascosa County to help show support for our first responders, our military, and our nation.

The public is not only invited, but encouraged to attend to show support and solidarity.

The ceremony will be held at the Atascosa County Courthouse on Wednesday, Sept. 11, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the flagpole. If you are unable to attend, please take a moment to remember those victims of the attack and the first responders who ran towards danger and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

In the event of inclement weather, the Jourdanton Civic Center will be the alternate venue.

9/11 Memorial Climb at Tower of Americas in SA

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Tower of the Americas will pay tribute to the 343 firefighters, 70 law enforcement officers and nine emergency response personnel who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Opening ceremony is at 8 a.m. Starting at 8:46 a.m., local-area firefighters, law enforcement officials, military personnel and civilians will climb the 952 steps of the Tower of the Americas to recognize each fallen hero. Participants will climb the Tower twice to reach and actually exceed the 110 floors of the World Trade Center and will also carry a tag that honors each firefighter, law enforcement officer and EMS personnel who lost their life on this tragic day in American history. The memorial climb will conclude with the ringing of a bell at 10:30 a.m. recognizing the collapse of the North Tower.

40th Wild Bill Gallop 5K & Fun Walk Sept. 14

You still have time to snag a free T-shirt for signing up early for the 40th Wild Bill Gallop 5K and two-mile fun walk. The event will take place at the new and improved Pleasanton River Park, Saturday, Sept. 14 at 8 a.m.

This fun-filled race features free homemade breakfast tacos and tamales, adult and non-adult beverages after the race.

The Gallop kicks off a day-long string of Cowboy Homecoming activities at the River Park that includes the Cowboy Homecoming Parade, six bands (day and night), Chili Cook-off, Margarita contest, sand volleyball, washer tournament, kid’s play area, food trucks/ vendors and so much more.

Pre-registration for the Wild Bill Gallop is $15 per participant. Registration at the event is $20. Participants are encouraged to arrive by 7 a.m. There are medals for first, second, and third place in each age group and gender for the 5K Run only.

Poteet Community Yard Sale on Sept. 14

Come sell or shop at the Poteet Community Yard Sale, on Saturday, Sept. 14. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Poteet Canyon Park, 785 8th St. Free pet licenses with proof of rabies vaccine.

Please come by Poteet City Hall to register and get a permit, free of charge for this event. Deadline is Sept. 8.

Native Americans of Texas Golf Tourney

Native Americans of Texas invites you, your family and friends to join them for their 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at the Pleasanton Country Club on Sept. 14. The golf tournament is the primary fundraising activity for the Native Heritage Community.

Golfers, get ready for a fantastic day of competition and a chance to win a variety of prizes. The tourney format will be a 4-person scramble. Get your teams together for a great time.

Pre-registration starts now at the Country Club. The fee is $60 for veterans. Pre-registration fee is $70 and will be $80 at the tournament.

Check in begins at 7 a.m. and tournament plays at 8 a.m. Each golf entry includes green fees and cart. No outside alcoholic beverages allowed.
