This month will mark the one-year anniversary since Sunshine House Coffee, started by 50-50 partners Audrey McCleary and Kelli Hindes, opened in Jourdanton. It also marks the four-year anniversary of the passing of McCleary’s children, Madison (18) and Tanner (11), in January 2017. The beautifully designed, family-friendly coffee shop has become widely popular amongst young and old folks alike. But its start came as an opportunity for McCleary and her husband, Kevin, to give back to the community.

To honor their children’s legacy of kindness, compassion and empathy, the McClearys started a movement and a 501(c)3 nonprofit titled #spreadkindnessforMandT, encouraging others to continue their legacy by performing acts of kindness for others. The Jourdanton and surrounding communities rallied behind the McCleary family, offering continued support and embracing the movement as evidenced by many random acts for strangers, seen all over town, the country and even the world. Opening Sunshine House Coffee is the McClearys’ way of honoring their children, giving back to the community and continuing their platform of kindness by creating a gathering place focused on coffee, community and kindness.

The McClearys’ story recently caught the attention of award-winning reporter Shane McAuliffe, host of “The Texas Bucket List.” McAuliffe’s program is based in College Station and dedicated to everything that must be seen, done and experienced in the Lone Star State.

“The biggest thing for us is just telling stories about Texans and people. It’s about the people we talk to, their story and why they’re important to Texas,” said McAuliffe. “This was a no-brainer story. To hear what the Mc- Clearys went through … I mean this is definitely one we wanted to jump on. I’m very honored to get to tell their story.”

McAuliffe and his team traveled to Sunshine House Coffee Monday morning to interview the McClearys and a few members of the community including Trace Blair, Benita Muckelroy and Barbara Peeler.

Family friend and neighbor Trace Blair spoke about how Sunshine House Coffee was the “medicine this community needed” following the passing of Madison and Tanner McCleary. Blair’s family is neighbor to the McClearys and his youngest daughter, Sydney Beth, was a classmate and close friend of Tanner.

“It’s not just about opening the coffee shop. It’s about #spreadkindnessfor- MandT and where the coffee shop originated from. This exposure validates what we’re doing. Anytime we can tell people about the movement and talk about Madison and Tanner and how it got started is amazing. So, the more people who can hear our story, we love that. It’s a great platform to be able to tell others about our movement and Sunshine House Coffee,” said Mc- Cleary.

With the coffee shop’s one-year anniversary coming up on January 29, McCleary expressed her appreciation and gratitude to the community for their support. Sunshine House Coffee was opened for two months before COVID-19 forced them to shut down. One month later, they reopened their drive-thru and have been busy every day since.

“It’s been a crazy year to start a business, but our community has been amazing. They have supported us from day one. And of course, we always look for ways to support our community as well,” said McCleary. Sunshine House Coffee has given back to first responders and military personnel with free coffee as well as donated to the local food bank.

“We are so appreciative of our community, so we’re trying to show them how much we love them and are thankful for them as well. We couldn’t have made it without them and the wonderful community support we have here.”

The McClearys’ story will air on McAuliffe’s “The Texas Bucket List” sometime in the spring. Keep your eye in a future issue of the Pleasanton Express and our social media for the episode’s premiere date.

Sunshine House Coffee is located at 1752 E. Highway 97 in Jourdanton. They are open from 6 a.m.- 2 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays.
