Oscar Eugene “Gene” Stephens, 84 passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at home in Pleasanton. He was born August 2, 1934 in New Braunfels to O.B. and Leotie Gertrude (Threadgill) Stephens. Gene attended and graduated from New Braunfels High School in 1953. He worked for New Braunfels Textile Mill until 1955 when he took a position with United Gas Company in San Marcos, Texas. He married the love of his life Alphann Lawler on February 12, 1956 in Brenham, Texas. They moved several times with the gas company but came to Pleasanton in September of 1981. Gene retired in January of 1996 after 41 years with the gas company.

He is preceded in death by his son Russell Stephens and parents O. B. and Leotie Stephens.

Oscar is survived by his wife Alphann (Lawler) Stephens, sons Bradley W. Stephens and Elliot L. Stephens all of Pleasanton; daughters Cynthia Stephens Campbell of Bastrop, Lynn Stephens Stoebner and husband Ray of Goliad, daughter-in-law Debra McGarity Stephens of Victoria; grandchildren Colby Stephens, Andrew Campbell, Michael Campbell, Tyler Campbell, Amy Stoebner, Amanda Stoebner, Dallas Stoebner and wife Belle, Woody Stephens, Foster Stephens, Rhonda Gorsline and husband Michael and Sydnee Michael and six greatgrandchildren.

A visitation was Sunday, January 6, from 5-8 p.m. at the Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton. A funeral service was held Monday, January 7, at 10 a.m. at the Hurley Funeral Home Chapel in Pleasanton. Interment followed at the Memory Gardens in Victoria at 2 p.m.
