Opportunity for local teachers

Atascosa County teachers who are interested in exploring how entomology and plant and soil science can be included in math, social studies and language arts lessons are invited to apply now for this year’s Summer Agricultural (Ag) Institute at Tarleton State University in Stephenville.

“Many children are now at least three generations removed from the farm. They may not understand how their food is grown or where it comes from,” said Pete Pawelek County Farm Bureau President. “Our goal is to help teachers integrate lessons about agriculture into their curriculum to help bridge that gap for their students.”

The Summer Ag Institute doesn’t give teachers something additional to teach. Instead, it offers a way to incorporate aspects of agriculture into their normal curriculum. Teachers who attend the week-long course, held June 9-13, are eligible for 45 clock hours of professional development.

“We value our area teachers. So we’re offering scholarships to help send them to the Summer Ag Institute,” Pete Pawelek said. “We encourage any teacher who is interested to apply as soon as possible.”

Applications for the Summer Ag Institute can be found on TexasFarmBureau.org under the “Youth & Education” tab. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, April 30.
