IF YOU WANT A SAY, SIGN PETITION TODAY
We hear some county residents are still confused as to exactly what the petition is. We are happy to keep slicing and dicing until it is understandable enough to digest…before it is too late! Here it is:
There are two types of county status designations in Texas when it comes to annexation-Tier 1 and Tier 2.
Tier 1 counties have no say on annexation of properties. Municipalities can annex properties without the owner’s consent.
Tier 2 counties must put the annexation proposal up for a vote. Residents have a vote. They can decide whether or not they want their properties to be annexed…or not.
WHAT IS THE PETITION FOR:
We want Atascosa County’s status to be changed to a Tier 2 county so that we have a vote on annexation of our properties. At this time we are Tier 1 and do NOT have a vote.
WHY ARE WE COLLECTING NAMES?
In order to change our status from a Tier 1 county (no property rights) to a Tier 2 county (have property rights), 10% of the registered voters in the county must sign a petition stating that they want to change the status of their county.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER WE SIGN?
If 10% of registered voters in the county sign the petition, the request is put on the November election ballot. County residents will decide on whether they remain a Tier 1 (no say) county or change to a Tier 2 (have a say in annexation of property).
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
1. Tier 2 status gives us property rights. We have a say in whether or not our properties are annexed.
2. Tier 2 status protects our county borders from other municipalities. If San Antonio wants to annex land in Atascosa County it must get the approval of the landowners.
3. Tier 2 status protects landowners from being annexed into municipalities inside the county. Municipalities must ask for land owner’s approval in order to annex properties outside of their city limits.
WHERE DO WE SIGN THE PETITION?
We have petitions at retail locations throughout the county. See our locations list at the top of this page. We will also have sign up locations Friday, Saturday and Sunday so you can drive up and sign.
WHEN DO WE SIGN?
Today. Our deadline to turn in the petition is Sunday, August 5, 2018. We do not have enough signatures, yet.
Sign today. Have a Say. Prevent hostile take over of your property.
