Nation-wide cell phone message test alert today

According to Atascosa County Emergency Management Coordinator, David Prasifka everyone should expect to receive an alert message on their cell phone. The nationwide test alert will be sent to every active cell phone in the United States at 1:18 p.m C.D.T.

The mass notification system, called the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA), has been organized by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FEMA is an agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security. The message will have the header “Presidential Alert” and say “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”

This is similar to the known Emergency Alert System (EAS) tests which are conducted on television and radio to notify citizens of emergencies.
