Naomi Fern Riley (née Mauldin), age 87, of Poteet, Texas passed away peacefully in her sleep and went to be with her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, September 17, 2015.
She was known by her middle name, Fern, for most of her life. She was born in Fletcher, Oklahoma on August 9, 1928 to Luther and Lottie Jane (née Mollinex) Mauldin.
Not long after he returned home from Germany and serving in WWII, Fern married her lifelong friend, partner and loving husband, Gay Albert Riley, on October 19, 1946.
Fern was a faithful Christian who loved Jesus and made her walk with God a daily priority. She was active in her church and had a heart for serving others and helping those in need. Even after her health kept her at home, she was always on the lookout for someone she could help by serving them food and cooking up recipes. Fern had a reputation for always bringing extra food to family gatherings and holiday events. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren knew they would always leave those gatherings with a bag full of cookies, containers full of her famous glass cake and small tubs of her Thanksgiving dressing. Ask any one of her grandkids AND their friends and you’ll find out that Fern Riley made the absolute best hamburgers and French fries! Her heart for serving was expressed through her love and skill in cooking. If she learned of anyone in need, whether a friend, neighbor or someone in the community, she would find a way to take them love filled recipes.
Fern possessed an inner determination and even stronger will power. She passed these qualities down and they live on through her daughters, grand and great-grandchildren to this very day.
She is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Gay Albert Riley.
Fern is also survived by many who will miss her: Daughters Carolyn Riley Gillaspia (Dale), Kaye Riley Anders (Charles) and two sisters, Alma Watson of Shawnee, Oklahoma and Velma Clark of Ft. Worth, Texas.
Additionally, she is survived by six grandchildren: Clarissa Gillaspia Mayse, Scott Gillaspia, Misty Gillaspia Wiechring (Brad), Rebecca Gillaspia, Chad Anders and Kelly Anders.
She will be watching her seven great grandchildren from heaven: Joel Dyes, Cole Wiechring, Zane Gillaspia, Kiley Wiechring, James Dyes, Tanner Wiechring and Caden Gillaspia.
She is further survived by numerous nephews and nieces and greatly enjoyed spending time with her nephew, James Moore. She and Gay considered him like their own son.
