In July 1941 their son, Phillip Dale Kelly, was born. In 1943 “big” Dale left to serve in WWII with the US Army. Kathryne owned and operated Kelly & Kelly Salon of Beauty at 2616 Briarhurst until 1970 when she retired from the business. She kept her cosmetology license current for 20 more years and cut hair for friends and family because she loved grooming and beauty.

She was an avid gardener, a master seamstress and a prolific, talented artist. So many of her customers, friends and family members were blessed to receive handmade clothing she designed, carefully propagated plants from her garden and numerous art works over the years including paintings and soft sculpture cactus.

Widowed in 1998, Kathryne sold her home in Houston at age 82 and moved to the Hill Country where she built a new home she designed. At age 86 she took the trip of a lifetime with her eldest granddaughter to visit Ireland. Kathryne lived in Spring Branch until age 95, she moved to San Antonio after a stroke in 2014 to live with her daughter and youngest granddaughter. She made more than a dozen oil paintings in the last two years of her life.
