Pleasanton’s Hilton Mehrmann signed to play baseball for Angelo State University on Jan. 9.

“Since I was three years old, it’s been my dream,” he said.

Mehrmann took a big leap last year as a junior, garnering a 1.77 ERA and striking out 71 batters in 52 2/3 innings.

“It was all the hard work I put in. My goal was to get 70 [strikeouts] and I achieved that,” he said.

Mehrmann’s fastball has been in the mid-80 mileper hour range.

As he wrote goals in preparation for the season that starts next month, he stated his hope is to hit 90 miles per hour this season. He also throws a changeup, slider and sinker.

Mehrmann said he chose Angelo State because of the coaches and the program’s history of success.

Angelo State has won at least 33 games in each of the past four seasons and played in the NCAA Division II National Championship Series from 2015 to 2017.

Mehrmann thanked his father, J.G., for teaching him everything he knows about pitching and strategizing with him after tournaments. J.G. said he always loved the little baseball moments with Hilton.

“My most fond memories are not necessarily watching the games that he played. The memories I hold closest are throwing catch and talking baseball and strategy as we drove back from long tournaments,” J.G. said.

Mehrmann also expressed appreciation for the assistance of Matt Shannon, a Pleasanton High School graduate and former Angelo State pitcher who now is a reliever in the Toronto Blue Jays minor league system.

“Matt put in a good word,” Mehrmann said.

Pleasanton baseball coach Jeff Niemietz said Mehrmann has shown great dedication on the field.
