McMullen Co. beats Waelder in meeting of top-10 teams



Ranked No. 5 in the preseason TABC poll, the McMullen County boys have high hopes for the 2021-2022 season.

The Cowboys began their season on the right foot after they defeated No. 10 Waelder 63-40 Friday night. Senior Troy Allen led the way for McMullen County with 31 points in addition to four steals. Junior Shawn Heritage also contributed with 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

The very next day, the Cowboys travelled to take on Nordheim where they won 74-39. Senior Rudy Mesa recorded a teamhigh 19 points to go along with his three steals. Heritage contributed with his presence on both sides of the ball. The 6-foot-1 guard finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks. Junior Brayden Serrata had a team-high 12 rebounds.

McMullen County played at John Paul Tuesday night. Scores were unavailable at the time of publication. They’ll return for a home game this Friday against Knippa, which is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
