Jourdanton’s Garrett McDonald earned fourth place in the 148-pound weight class in the Class 3A powerlifting meet in Abeline on March 23. He was tied for third plac eafter the final event, but took fourth since the lifter with which he was tied weighed less than him.

“I think I did good, but I know I could have done better,” said McDonald, a senior who was in his first trip to the state meet. He added that his weight class, which included a field of 19 contenders, was extremely tough. “Working with coach [James] Martin and our entire athletic group, I’ve definitely gotten substantially stronger.”

McDonald had a total lift of 1,290 pounds while competing in a field of 19. His squat lift of 575 pounds was a career best and 30 pounds more than his regional lift. His bench press of 285 pounds was a little bit more than in regionals. His 430-pound deadlift was 20 pounds less than in regionals.

“It was well worth all the hard work and the time put in. I’m extremely thankful for being able to go,” he said.

He was in second place before dropping into a tie for third after his last deadlift attempt.

McDonald had to drop weight to be at his state meet weight and spent a great amount of time hydrating and walking around at the state meet. Since the state meet is a long day, McDonald said his passion for lifting kept him mentally straight throughout the event.
