I t is with a saddened heart I write my last article as Mayor for the City of Poteet. The city elections were held last Saturday; unfortunately, I did not receive the majority of the votes to continue as mayor. The majority of the voters elected someone else to guide the council and be the city’s official representative. I am grateful to have been afforded the opportunity and honor these past two years to serve as mayor for our great city. I greatly enjoyed representing the city at so many different levels and events, especially when I was invited for school events. Serving as your mayor was one of my greatest accomplishments. I am proud of my many achievements. Just to name a few of the major attainments, I fulfilled my legislative responsibilities; actively ensured the laws and ordinances of the city were properly carried out; established order and decorum during the city council meetings; initiated action to replacing over seven miles of freshwater lines; obtained city council approval for annexation of 183 acres for the development of a new subdivision of approximately 380 houses; coordinated the establishment of the Head-Start program; initiated the creations of the Atascosa County Cowboy Connect commuter; received the “AACOG Government Project of the Year Award 2020;” and led the city’s response during the COVID 19 pandemic.
I developed positive momentum and synergy in our community, in and around our county, at state and national levels. I enthusiastically devoted my time, energy and personal attributes to promote and enhance the quality of life in our community, to improve the council’s productivity and to boost the city’s economic appeal for potential business investors. I hope my successor’s only agenda is to have the city’s best interest at heart. I wish the new council well and hope they will work together for the welfare of the community and continue the positive drive. The new council will be sworn into office on May 11.
I thank everyone who supported me during my term and all who voted for me. A special thank you to the Pleasanton Express for their support and printing my mayor’s column every week. Hopefully, the new mayor will continue to provide a weekly mayor’s column.
God bless the USA, our Great State of Texas, and our beautiful City of Poteet! Keep them all in your prayers. See y’all around town.
Keep Poteet Strong. Gig’em Aggies
