Well, the Poteet Strawberry Festival has come and gone. As a participant in the parade, I witnessed a lot of participants in the parade and many onlookers lined up along the city streets. The parade was a great success. Special thanks to the parade Grand Marshall, Stephanie Serna from San Antonio KSAT-12. Stephanie is a weekday anchor on Good Morning San Antonio, GMSA, at 9 a.m. It was a great pleasure meeting Stephanie and her beautiful family. I had the honor to present Stephanie with a flat of delicious strawberries donated by the Donovan Garcia farm. I thank everyone (participants and onlookers) who came out to support the Poteet Strawberry Festival. There was a huge attendance at the festival grounds. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the entertainment and especially the food. As in previous years, everything appeared to run smoothly. Special recognition and thanks to some BIPs -BERRY IMPORTANT PEOPLE, the Strawberry Festival Association directors and staff who worked so hard to organize this event. They had many obstacles to overcome this year. Since the decision to have the festival was not finalized until February, in essence, they had to put everything in play in about two months, which usually takes several months. Also special thanks to the Poteet Rotary Club for sponsoring and organizing the Strawberry Judging and Auction. There were 39 entries in the strawberry competition. Congratulations to this year’s Grand Champion, Selso Garcia and the Reserve Grand Champion, Five Cousins’ Strawberry Patch. The success of the festival is also attributed to all the other hard working organizations and volunteers doing their part ensuring everyone had a good time. A shoutout to all of the law enforcement officers who worked during the festival to ensure everyone’s safety. I expect next year’s 2022 festival to be a special and greater event. It will be the Poteet Strawberry Festival’s 75th anniversary. A reminder of our upcoming city election. Early voting starts next week on Monday, April 19-April 27. Early voting will be at the Poteet Public Library. Election day is on Saturday, May 1 and the voting location is at the Poteet Junior High School cafeteria. I encourage everyone to get informed on the candidates’ qualifications, past experiences and vote for the best qualified candidates. Sometimes during elections campaigning, candidates make promises of actions if elected, for example, firing particular staff. I want everyone to be aware, the Poteet Mayor does NOT have legal authority to directly fire anyone. The mayor can only make recommendations to the council for consideration and possible action. A mayor’s personal agenda should only be on how to improve the quality of life for the community. I encourage all voters to make THEIR own decision and go vote for THEIR choice.
Let’s keep Poteet strong.
