Spring is here and a lot of activity is happening in our community. Most people are looking towards getting out and about to enjoy the outdoors. There are a few activities schedules in our community. Also on Saturday, the Poteet Rotary Club and the Poteet Strawberry Festival Association are conducting the sifting of the strawberries to qualify for the strawberry judging and auction to be held during the Strawberry Festival. The strawberries growers will be bringing in their best berries on Saturday to be judged to advance to get a chance to complete the following Saturday for the Grand Champion and Reserve Champion and places in each variety. Also this Saturday, the Poteet Rotary Club, the Poteet Strawberry Festival Association and the Tri-City Road Warriors are hosting their first Strawberry Festival 5k/1 mile run/walk. The event will be held at the Poteet Strawberry Festival grounds with the walk starting around 7:30 a.m. and the 5k starting at 8 a.m. There are a total of 150 registered participants for the event. I encourage all to come out to cheer the participates during the event.
This Sunday is Easter Sunday. He is Risen. I know many like to celebrate the Easter season with family gathering, egg hunts, cookouts and other activities. Many people have received a vaccine for the coronavirus (COVID 19). However, there are still many who have not. The numbers of the new positive COVID-19 cases are declining. Despite the decline, I encourage everyone to continue to use caution, practice sanitary techniques, and when possible wear some form of face covering around those who are not of the same household. The Poteet Strawberry Festival is just around the corner. Plans are underway to make this year’s event another success. There will be some modification on the operation at the festival grounds to help enhanced pandemic safety measures. I am sure, once herd immunization is reached, enhance pandemic safety measures will no longer be necessary.
The past Tuesday, the Poteet Grange and Poteet Shalom Ministries hosted a “Meet the Candidates” forum for the candidates running for Mayor, City of Poteet and City Council positions 4 and 5. Attendance for the event was by invitation only. Each candidate was allowed to bring only 3 guests. The event was recorded and posted on different social media sights. I encourage all the Poteet voters to watch the videos to help make an informed decision before voting.
Remember to Keep Poteet Strong, Gig’em Aggies.
