Mayor’s Message – Poteet

The City of Poteet continues to actively monitor and stay abreast of the changing conditions surrounding COVID-19. On Sunday, Atascosa County reported two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in county residents. These were the first cases reported in the county. The individuals are experiencing mild symptoms and isolating at home. The Texas Department of State Health Services is supporting Atascosa County in identifying any close contacts of the patients while sick, so they can be isolated and monitored for symptoms and quickly tested, if needed. You can check the Atascosa County website at www.atascosacounty.texas.gov and their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/countyofatascosa for updates.

If you believe you have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus, monitor yourself closely for symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat and shortness of breath for 14 days after the exposure. If you experience any of these symptoms and do not need urgent medical attention, isolate at home and contact your healthcare provider. If you experience flu-like symptoms, please call your primary healthcare provider for guidance before going to the doctor’s office or any medical facility There are several things everyone can do to help prevent the potential spread of COVID-19.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcoholbased sanitizer; • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands;

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick; STAY HOME WHEN YOU ARE SICK!

• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then wash your hands, and;

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Minimizing exposure is especially important for people who are 65 or older or who have an underlying health condition such as heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or cancer. If you know of a relative or friends who is in this higher risk category, please give them a call to check on them occasionally, especially if they live alone. In this time of isolation, they may need some assistance (i.e. food, water, prescription medication, etc.).

The public can find up-to-date coronavirus information at dshs.texas. gov/coronavirus. If you have questions about COVID-19, call 2-1-1. You can also go to the City of Poteet website at https:// www.poteettx.org and the Poteet Facebook page, City of Poteet, for local information.

There is mass hysteria related to COVID-19 causing unnecessary shortage of basic foods and sanitary items. There is no food storage or threat of a shortage except for the one being created at stores by individuals attempting to hoard the items. Everyone, please remain calm. Please be safe and use caution in your daily activity.

Poteet people are strong. Working together, we will make it through this challenge and become even stronger.
