Mayor’s Message – Pleasanton

Greetings from the Mayor’s Office, I was very surprised this past week when reading a column in the

Pleasanton Express written by Warren Domke. In working with the media for some 30 years or so, one thing I learned… if you’re going to say something or print something that is put out to the public, make sure it is factual and Domke’s column is not. In writing about the Atascosa Animal Allies, Mr. Domke states, “They are not taxpayer supported.” I beg to differ. Mr. Domke leaves the taste in people’s mouths that the City and the taxpayers of this city are not supporting the Allies. At least these are the comments I have received from several people who read his column. So, let me set it straight.

The City of Pleasanton gives the Allies a budget of at least $9,500. We also pay a full-time employee, who is a member of the Allies, and works directly with them from our shelter. We furnish her salary, insurance and retirement. Plus, we pay another part-time employee to assist. These employees are an addition to our Animal Control Officers and were hired at the request of the Allies. The City also has several SNAP Clinics each year for spaying and neutering, and pay for all medications. And in the event the Allies spend more than we budget, it will be covered. And yes, all of this money is taxpayer money. So, I can safely say that the Atascosa Animal Allies do operate on taxpayers’ money and have a great deal of support from myself, the City and a very large percentage of our citizens. And this support will continue as long as I am Mayor. Until next week, best regards.
