Mayor’s Message – Pleasanton

I hope everyone is having a great week. At last week’s meeting, we swore in the new council. I’d like to thank former council members Diana Prasifka and Kenny Hernandez for their service to the city. It was great working with them; we got a lot accomplished. No doubt these two will be missed. They have dedicated many years to the City of Pleasanton. If you see them out in the community, give them a fist bump and tell them thanks.

Several years ago, citizens voted for council member terms of office to extend to three-year terms. Previously, the council had two-year terms. Being that it takes a while for a new member to get settled in the position, the extra year makes a difference. We had an election last year and this year, so there will not be a council member election in 2023. Prasifka and Hernandez left due to term limits. At our meeting Thursday, May 19, we swore in the new council. One of the council members, Robert Leonhardt, was elected for another term. The city’s two new council members are Jaime “JJ “Treviño Jr. and Joey Macon. I would like to welcome them aboard and I look forward to working with them.

We have been very fortunate that the council works well together. Council gets informed to make sure that the best decision is made. Most of the items that we have on the agenda have been discussed and everybody does their homework. This makes for a very smooth-running meeting. If you come to a meeting or watch the live feed, you will notice that there is usually not a lot of discussion. To me that is a sign that everybody has reviewed the items and asked the appropriate questions before the meeting. That makes processing the business of the city much easier. Staff is very open to explaining items so the council gets informed before the meeting. I hope everyone has a great rest of the week. Remember that we only have one meeting a month. We will be meeting on the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. with the exception of November and December where we will meet the first Thursday of the month because of the holidays. The decision to go to a single meeting has already proved to be more efficient. For one example, City Secretary Andres Aguirre is starting to realize how much more time he has to work on other city business. We just did not have the workload to justify two meetings. We were meeting twice a month just because it was in the city charter. This decision by the voters will also save the city approximately $20,000-plus a year. So come and join us on June 16 for our regularly scheduled council meeting.
