Mayor’s Message

Greetings from the Mayor’s office:

This past week I had the opportunity to attend the Texas Municipal League’s Conference for newly elected mayors. It was held in Waco and I certainly came back with some valuable information.

After working for a state agency for some 26 plus years, I have learned that “you never know which way the wind blows in Austin” when the state legislators meet. The upcoming session will start this January and it is one that I and TML will watch especially close.

For the past several legislative sessions, the lawmakers have tried to influence or “flat out” take control of city government with the introduction of several bills.

Here in Texas, state government provides no funding for city services aside from a few grant programs. We, as a city, MUST decide what services we need and how we are going to find ways to pay for them. These are the MOST important decisions we must make as a community. And, these decisions should be made by YOU and the people YOU elect locally to lead this community and not the state legislators. This January, we will watch Austin and watch closely to see which way the wind blows. Until then, best regards.
