Greetings from the Mayor’s office: It’s Cowboy Homecoming 2019, and I hope you will join us in the celebration this weekend. I am looking forward to all the activities and can’t help remembering the first Homecoming in the mid 60s and all the preparation that went into starting this annual tradition in this wonderful city.
I was in high school and will never forget when my dad told me that on the weekends, we would be traveling to many of the south Texas cities to advertise the Homecoming in August. I thought that might be fun, but, when I found out it included mules and a covered wagon, I was not so enthused.
Along with Ben and Mona Parkers’ mules and wagon, we would haul the “mobile advertising four-legged float” to surrounding cities, unload, and drive the team of mules and wagon through the downtown area and with the assistance of a loud speaker and mic, we let the folks know about our upcoming celebration. I remember traveling to Floresville, Stockdale, Jourdanton, Poteet and other south Texas cities. If they had had an annual celebration, we were in the parade and inviting everyone to come to Pleasanton’s Cowboy Homecoming in August.
Mostly fond memories and thinking back to all the folks that made the first Cowboy Homecoming possible and all the hard work that went into making the Homecoming what it is today. And, also remembering those stubborn mules… most of the time, not very cooperative. But, that’s another story. See you this weekend. Until then… best wishes…
