In recognition of National Diabetes Awareness Month in November, the Jourdanton City Council welcomed Type 1 diabetic Max Wiggins and his Diabetic Alert Dog, Diamond. Wiggins, a seventh grader who loves baseball, led the Pledge of Allegiance and Texas Pledge at the Nov. 18 regular meeting. Wiggins shared how Diamond is trained to detect his blood sugar levels and alert him when the levels get too high or too low. Council member Karen Pesek added that the issue hits home with her, as two of her children are also Type 1 diabetics. It is a life or death matter and managing it is especially important.
