Mary Alice Aaldering Zavala, 86, of Columbia, S.C., formerly from Monroe, Mich, and Poteet, Texas, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021. Born Oct. 2, 1935, in LaSalle, Mich., she was a daughter to the late Henry and Alice Aaldering.

Mary met Saturnino Zavala in the early 1950s and in October 1952 they married and went on to raise 11 children, 5 boys and 6 girls. In her later years, she was very active in her church, Hosanna Church of Poteet. Mary was also very fond of gardening and crocheting.

Survivors include her sons, Gregory S., Valentino, Julian G. and Orlando V. Zavala; daughters, Eva M. Contreras, Angeline T. Bijarro, Susan E. Zavala, Yolanda L. Zavala, Jennifer A. Canchola and Ursula Zavala; 72 grandchildren; a greatgrandchild; and her youngest sister, Jeanne Chambers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Saturnino P. Zavala; son, Mariano M. Zavala; granddaughter, Brittany Canchola; grandsons, Elijah Gonzales and Fabian Zavala; and younger sister, Dorothy Yeager.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, Columbia, SC is assisting the family locally.

Speaking to all that knew her and loved as we did, we ask that grief and sadness be set aside and that you raise your voice in triumph, a child of the Most High GOD has graduated.
