MARY FRANZ

Mary Pickens Franz, 82, of Lafayette, LA passed away December 23, 2018 after a lengthy illness. She was born December 22, 1936 in Kerrville the oldest of six children of Verna Helen and Robert L. Pickens.

Mary graduated from Bruni High school and in 1957 married her high school sweetheart Robert S. Franz. They were married for 51 years. After graduating from business school Mary embarked on a career path that took her down many avenues – from working in the public school sector to the oil industry, as well as raising three children. Much of her volunteer work involved children and families – whether as a docent for the Lafayette, LA Natural History Museum or as a courtappointed special advocate (CASA) for children in foster care when she returned to Texas in her later years.

Mary was fond of all forms of art, in particular watercolors and Impressionism, and pursued art lessons from local artists both in Texas and Louisiana. Art museums in France and Italy were favorite destinations during her and Bob’s travels through Europe over the years. She would gladly enlist any friends and family to join her in exploring the many local art museums!

She is survived by three children who will miss her love and guidance; Leslie (Andy) White of Southington, CT, Robert S. Franz, Jr. of Lafayette, LA, and Bryan W. Franz of Lafayette, LA. Her grandchildren Benjamin T. and Meredith H. White of Branford, CT mourn the loss of their “Southern” grandmother and the humorous expressions she entertained them with. Her sisters Dorris Knight of Spring, Deborah (John) Geistdweidt of Doss and brothers Raymond (Carol) of Spring and Mark (Linda Ammons) of Coppell will miss her spunk. As one sibling said, “Dynamite comes in a small package”! She was preceded in death by her parents and little sister Karla Martin. Mary was so thankful for the many dear and lifelong friends she had in both Texas and Louisiana – your friendships were an anchor. She was especially thankful for the caring support received from the staff of Cornerstone Assisted Living and the Hospice of Acadiana in Lafayette, LA.

A funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. on January 3 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1435 W. Oaklawn Rd., Pleasanton. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift in Mary’s name to Hospice of Acadiana 2600 Johnston, Suite 200 Lafayette, LA 70503; All Saints Episcopal Church, P.O.
