Martina “Marta” Riojas Benavidez, age 90, of Charlotte went to be with the Lord on July 19, 2021. She was born in the farming community of Shatel in Frio County, on Feb. 10, 1931, to Estanizlado and Manuela (Munoz) Riojas.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Estanizlado and Manuela; husband, Margarito; sisters, Emma Torrez and Jesusa Castro; grandchildren, Evander Benavidez, Linda Sambrano and Ronnie Joe Tijerina; and late son-in-law, Danny Balderas.
Marta is survived by her: children, Irene (Henry) Gonzales, Beatrice (Abel) Sambrano, Dale (Daniel) Mchazlett, Ricky, Yolanda (the late Eliassar) Balderas, Sylvia (Arnulfo) Guerrero, Lucy Balderas-Camacho (Lauro) and Thelma (Martin) Castillo, Margarito III (Diana), Paul (Rosie), Michael (Gricelda) and Jimmy (Veronica); siblings, Petra Salazar (Brownfield), Catalina Garcia (Brownfield), Eluteria Torrez (Sundown), Maria Gonzales (Lubbock), Pete Riojas (Van Wert, OH), Joe Riojas (Othello, WA) and Genovevo Riojas (Brownfield); and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Marta and her husband Margarito Solano Benavidez, Jr, were married on Oct. 15, 1947, in Jourdanton. They were married for 54 years. They lived in Frio County before moving to Charlotte. Marta was a strong woman. A homemaker who raised 12 children. She was a devout Christian and lifelong member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Charlotte. You could always find her at the kitchen table reading the Bible. She truly enjoyed to spread God’s word. She loved being outside watering her plants. She took pride in maintaining her yard. She enjoyed sitting outside surrounded by bright, beautiful blooms. Marta was a great cook. Her homemade salsa was perfect for breakfast with her Huevos Rancheros and papas. She was also known for making great tortillas. Her grandchildren always looked forward to a fresh stack of tortillas with butter. She will truly be missed by many.
A visitation was held on Monday, July 26, at Hurley Funeral Home, from 2- 9 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 27, at 10 a.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church, located at 509 N. Edwards Ave. in Charlotte, with interment at Charlotte Community Cemetery.
