Martha Ormand

Martha Jane Ormand, age 82, of Jourdanton, Texas, passed away Friday, November 4, 2016 in San Antonio, Texas.  She was born in Jourdanton, to James Stephen and Marion Louise (Harper) Ormand on September 9, 1934.

Martha had a beautiful soul, and was a loving mother and friend.  She was a talented musician, singer and pianist and taught piano up until her last days.  She loved all things related to the arts and music, and it is simply impossible to describe her without this love of hers.

She was class valedictorian of her high school and completed her undergraduate degree at Texas Lutheran and received her Masters in Music from the University of Northern Colorado.  After college, she moved to Baytown, Texas but, she found peace returning to Jourdanton and living in the great community of people that knew her primary family.  She moved into her childhood home to be close to the memories of her own mother and siblings.

Martha’s great passion for music was passed on to all of her children.  John still sings today in his church choir and plays the guitar; Sarah, who knows and loves all flavors of music; Martha, who played the oboe and piano, and attends the symphony and Stephen, a trumpet player.

Martha had a sense of vivaciousness and laugh that could fill a room.  She could be witty and she shared this vitality with her mother.  She was a woman of faith and sang many solos in the church where we grew up.  Her “Oh Holy Night” solo lit up the church with light and beauty will always be remembered.  Music filled her heart and soul.

Being back in Jourdanton, she brought life back to the beautiful music room that her mother built with her many pianos and organs.  They both shared this love of music, and brought joy to many through the music they played.

She most of all loved calling and hearing from her children, playing the piano, and hearing about her grandchildren.  Her family always loved the many care packages she sent; thoughtful cards when we needed to be lifted up, piano music and special articles.   She loved her family dearly and wanted the best for them.

In Jourdanton, she was blessed with many friends who watched after her, for which her family is very grateful.  Her family along with many, will lift her up in prayer, sing to honor what she gave them, and love her always.

Martha is survived by her sons, John Stehling and wife Elisa and Stephen Stehling; daughters, Martha Ann and Sarah Stehling; brothers, James Ormand and wife Rosalee and Paul H. Ormand. She is also survived by grandchildren, Kate, Racheal, Sarah, Christina and Grace. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, James Stephen Ormand and Marion Louise (Harper) Ormand and sister Barbara Ormand.

Visitation will be held in the chapel at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton, from 5 – 9 p.m., Friday, November 11.  A funeral service will be held at United Methodist Church, 705 Chestnut Street, Jourdanton, at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 12.  Interment will follow in Jourdanton City Cemetery, Jourdanton.
