Maria Elena Alaniz, age 72, of Poteet, formerly of Flint, MI passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family on Monday, April 15, 2019. Mrs. Alaniz was born Wednesday, February, 26, 1947 in San Benito to parents, Jose Rivera and Juana Bonilla.
She was a kind, loving and devoted family woman, who was very strong in faith. Mrs. Alaniz was an avid volunteer of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Flint, MI, and also a member of St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church. She worked for 7 years and met her husband, Juan Alaniz, at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing MI. She worked numerous jobs cooking. She retired from Target after 20 years. Mrs. Alaniz was an avid walker, enjoyed gardening and especially dancing. She and her husband Juan also enjoyed spending time at the casino. She was a very giving person.
Maria Elena leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 49 years, Juan M. Alaniz of Poteet; sons, Samuel Alaniz and wife Delores of Flint, MI, Arthur Alaniz and wife Connie of Flint, MI, Ruben Alaniz and wife Lonna of Lafayette, IN, and Juan Alaniz Jr and wife Donna of Austin; daughters, Maria Inez Kahn and husband Mike of Waterford, MI, and Arlene Hernandez and husband Jesse of Freeport and sister, Matilda (Emo) Aguilar of Lansing, MI. She is also survived by her 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Maria Elena was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Juana (Bonilla) Rivera and brother, Juan Rivera.
Visitation was held at Hurley Funeral Home, 118 W. Oaklawn Road in Pleasanton, from 2-9 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m., Monday, April 22. Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church, in Poteet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 23. Serving as pallbearers for Mrs. Alaniz’s service were: Samuel Alaniz, Arturo Alaniz, Ruben Alaniz, Juan Alaniz Jr., Jesse Hernandez, Richard Rodriguez, and Larry Hernandez. Interment followed in Madre Dolorosa # 2 Cemetery in Poteet.
