Officer David Gardner of the Pleasanton Police Department was driving behind Robert Romero, 26, on Martin St. on Wednesday, October 30, according to Pleasanton Police Department Investigator Seth Trussell. Allegedly, Romero accelerated suddenly and without provocation. Gardner then switched on his lights and attempted to pull Romero over. Romero then allegedly led Gardner on a high speed chase through residential streets. Officer Tzu-Chi Chia came to assist.

Romero was eventually stopped by Chia and Gardner. Romero allegedly struck Chia in the face when Chia and Gardner were detaining him. Chia was not seriously injured, and Romero was taken to the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office.

Romero had an outstanding warrant from Bexar County for Driving While Intoxicated. Pleasanton Police Department charged Romero with Evading Arrest Detention with Vehicle, Resist Arrest Search or Transport, Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Reckless Driving and Assault of a Public Servant.

Romero is still in custody on a $94,800 bond set by Pleasanton Municipal Court Judge Elsie Guerra.
