LUCY CABALLERO

 

 

Lucy Caballero passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, October 3, 2018 in Austin at the age of 91. Lucia Gertrudis Garcia, (Lucy) was born May 5, 1927 in Campbellton.

Her father was Cesario Garcia and her mother, Adela Contreras Garcia. They had four children, Richard, Mary Louise, Lucy and Manuel. Sadly, she lost her mother at the age of 5 and Lucy was raised in both Campbellton and San Antonio by her father, aunts and uncles. With her father’s remarriage to Santos Llamas, Lucy was blessed with four additional siblings, Joe Albert, Cesario Jr., Felicia, and Abelardo.

Lucy graduated from Campbellton High School in 1946. In 1947, she married Andres Guerra Caballero at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Campbellton and lived there for most of her life. They had five children, Richard Garcia, Yolanda Theresa, Michael Andres, Kathy Arnold (Charles) and Carrie Dolezalek (Stephan).

She enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, and spending time with her family and even found time to help her husband manage the Campbellton Water Works. Lucy was a tireless volunteer for the Campbellton Elementary School as well as a teaching assistant for several years. She enjoyed traveling with some of her greatest memories including seeing a Broadway show, vacationing on the Mexican Coasts of Acapulco and Puerta Vallarta and visiting friends all across the country.

In later life, she was also blessed with two devoted grandsons, Richard Alexander and Andreas Christopher Dolezalek of Portola Valley, California. “Tia Lucy” as she was known to her family, was loved by her many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She is survived by two of her siblings, Felicia Garcia and Jo Albert Garcia and sisters–in-law, Johnnie and Paula Garcia, four children, two sons-in-law and her two grandsons.

Visitation was conducted at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton on Sunday, October 7, 2018 from 2p.m. to 9p.m. with a rosary recited at 7p.m. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, October 8, 2018 at 10a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Campbellton, followed by interment at Campbellton City Cemetery.
