Lon “Lonnie” Gillespie of Leming passed away on Sept. 20, 2017 at the age of 65. Lonnie was born on Oct. 17, 1951 in Pleasanton to Truxton and Grace Gillespie. Lonnie grew up in the Pleasanton/Leming area, and graduated from Pleasanton High School in 1970.
After his graduation, he began his career in woodworking and carpentry. In 1984 he started Gillespie Custom Cabinetry, and his sons have continued in his footsteps working with him in the company. Lonnie was proud to serve his community as a Atascosa County Commissioner, taking office in January of 2009. He loved working with his mule team going on trail rides, doing chuck wagon cooking and being outdoors. He had recently begun fly fishing, and enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren. Lonnie didn’t know a stranger, and enjoyed visiting and telling stories with everyone he met.
Lonnie is survived by his wife Debbie, sons Loren Gillespie and wife Tammy, and Mark Gillespie and wife Tina, grandchildren Cody, Auston, Tyler and Emery, sister Linda Kinkler and husband Sterling, brothers Dr. Richard Gillespie, Sammy Gillespie and wife Bernadette, Roger Gillespie and wife Kim, and Tommy Gillespie. Lonnie is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be on Friday, Sept. 29 from 2-8 pm at the Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton, with the family present from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 10:00 am at Cowboy Fellowship Church in Pleasanton.
