Local Matters

So far 2020 is turning out plenty great. My twin sons, Will Holmes and Zach Holmes, age 23 have official careers now with adult salaries and benefits. My husband, Noel and I will be attending seven weddings and one Bart-Mitzvah for people we love, cherish and adore. Noel, who is not a minister, has been asked to officiate at three of those weddings. For a rehearsal dinner, he along with our brother-in-law Les have been asked to cook their most famous mole enchiladas.

This work year looks promising for the Pleasanton Express. We came home with a first place in advertising from the Texas Press Association Convention. We just finished covering two county livestock shows that are always a huge benefit to this community. We take covering these events that showcase the very best youth in the country very seriously and have devoted time and pages to telling this fantastic agri-business story. A new date has been decided for the next Merry on Main Christmas festival which was a huge success this past December. I am, so honored to have served for two years on this committee and have signed up for a third. Merry on Main will be held December 4-5, 2020. I am on two other committees in Atascosa County. Both are with schools – Poteet ISD and Pleasanton ISD as part of the District Educational Improvement Committee (DEIC). It is a decision making and advisory group for the Superintendent and School Board in matters of district planning, operations, policies and procedures. While that sounds like a mouthful, its purpose is mighty. I have come away so impressed with the level of collaboration, commitment and concern for how to make sure our schools are operating at their highest level.

I attended a new meeting formed by Gloria Day who heads up the Inter-Agency Council. This new committee being formed is discussing the current issue of homelessness in Atascosa County. The Pleasanton Express will be keeping the community updated on the needs of the local homeless that cannot all be met by the local church.

In between covering the Atascosa County Livestock Show and before the McMullen County Livestock Show, I had the best day spent with the North American Association of Strawberry Growers who came to Poteet in two huge buses to tour four strawberry farms. I will be writing that story for next week’s front page of the Pleasanton Express to put you in the mood for the upcoming Poteet Strawberry Festival.

Thank you for being a reader of the Pleasanton Express. The team here is ever so grateful every time we are in public and someone stops to tell us how much they look forward to reading the news, sports and happenings in our paper which has been serving this county since 1909.
