Local Matters

I n Texas we do everything bigger and as a native Texan I like to think we do everything better. Be a Texas voter and let’s turn out bigger than all the other states. A record number of eligible Texas voters has been set – 15.5 million. But being able to vote and actually pulling the lever are not the same thing.

Have you exercised your right and done your civic duty by voting? I like to vote early just in case something happens to me and I cannot make it on election day. A record number of Texans have voted early according to the Texas Secretary of State’s office – almost three million.

If you are you one of the mighty who have used your vote to have a voice in the 2018 mid-term elections in Atascosa County? Three cheers and hats off to you. You upheld your obligation to this nation, your county and your town. The people you are voting for decide your taxes, your laws and your safety. They will make decisions that will impact education, property values, healthcare, immigration, veterans, highways, roads and infrastructure to name a few.

Your elected officials are so important as they represent you and become your advocate and your voice. Your elected officials are public servants and are there to represent and serve you. Get to know them before you vote and stay in touch with them after they are elected.

There are more than 26,000 registered voters in Atascosa County. To date, more than 5,576 have turned out for early voting. If you have not voted, please exercise your right and vote. It is like physical exercise, it takes an effort to do it but once you have done it you feel great!

You choose either way, when you vote and when you don’t. Choose not to vote and others choose who leads you. Now the latter is just not the Texas way.
