Levona Raye (Wagoner) Morris passed away unexpectedly on August 18, 2016, at the age of 52 at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital in San Antonio after being transferred to a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation.
Levona was born in Magnolia, Arkansas on January 18, 1964 to Billie Raye Wagoner and Lillian Oleta (Jones) Wagoner. Bill was a machinist and Oleta was a loving homemaker. The family moved to Texas in the late 60s.
Levona always wanted to be a teacher, and her favorite game as a child was to play school with as many friends as she could round up. She graduated from West Rusk High School in 1982. She continued her education at University of Texas at Tyler where she graduated with a bachelors degree in Elementary Education in 1989. That year Levona moved to Pleasanton with Donna Gieb after getting jobs with the Poteet Independent School District, where they both worked for the next 27 years. Levona taught several different grades over the years and for the last few years special education. Last year she taught elementary gifted and talented. Also she usually taught art or science after school and during summer school, but was unable this summer due to medical issues.
Levonas students loved her. She was a sweet and caring teacher and gave generously of herself. In her work, Levona touched many lives, and in the outpouring of sentiment at her death, many parents and former students as well as fellow teachers testified to how blessed they were to have known her.
On July 9, 1994, Levona married Anthony W. Morris, from San Antonio, and a year later they bought a house in Pleasanton. Anthony and Levona both loved dogs which were part of the family. Levona was especially fond of dachshunds.
Levona is survived by her husband Anthony and brother Gary Wagoner. Her sudden passing has made many of us reflect on the brevity of life and on how deeply one person can touch the hearts of others. She was a wonderful teacher and friend, a loving wife and sister, and someone who will be greatly missed. May those of us who knew her find comfort in our memories of her.
Levona was cremated at Meadowlawn Funeral Home in San Antonio.
There will be two memorial services for Levona, the first in Poteet and two weeks later in East Texas where she grew up and had maintained contact with friends and relatives through Facebook.
The memorials will be informal with no set speakers or service and are open to everyone to come say goodbye to Levona and share memories of her and celebrate her life.
Memorial services in Poteet will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the Grange from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The Grange is located at the corner of Ave D & 6th Street, about 2 blocks from Poteet Elementary School.
Memorial services in East Texas will be held on Saturday, September 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, located between Overton and Henderson on State Highway 323.
Memorial donations may be given online at gofund.me/LevonaMorris. Flowers should be silk arrangements to be at both memorial services, and will be placed on Levonas parents graves at Pleasant Hill Cemetery across the highway from the church.
Loved by many near and far.
