During the week of June 25-29, Peter Korus, Mesquite 4-H Club, represented the state of Texas as a member of the 2018 4-H National Shooting Sports Championships held in Grand Island, Nebraska. Peter participated in the Archery Compound Division. The 4-H Shooting Sports program strives to teach our nation’s young people science skills along with decision making, teamwork, self-discipline, self-confidence, and problem solving skills. Larry Perez of the Texas A & M University- College Station Extension office served as a member of the National 4-H Shooting

Sports Committee.

This contest began 19 years ago and gains popularity each year. There were 36 states represented this year. Teams in each division consisted of: Archery Compound, Archery Recurve, Small Bore Rifle, Small Bore Pistol, Air Rifle, Air Pistol, Muzzleloading, Hunting and Wildlife, and Shotgun. Peter competed each morning for three days out of the week, beginning with FITA, continuing to Field Round and ending with 3-D. Peter’s team placed 9th overall out of 24 teams. There were 99 participants for the Archery Compound Division, with 604 participants overall competing. It was a great turn out! Missouri won the State Sweepstakes, coming in 2nd was Texas. Texas has won State Sweepstakes 15 of the 19 years that the contest has been running with Missouri holding the title 4 years. It was a great experience and is encouraged for any child within 4-H to work hard, to make the best better and to one day say that they represented the state of Texas on the National team!
