Jourdanton tennis champion Lea Karren, a senior, won the Class AAA girls singles tennis title at Texas A&M University in a finals match with Corpus Christi London Senior Sara Humpal on Saturday, May 18.

Karren had solid wins in two sets, 6-1 and 6-3, to take the state crown.

Karren’s opponent, Humpal, had won the state title in her freshman year when CC London was a AA school. Humpal followed that up with state girls singles titles at CC London, then AAA, in her sophomore and junior years.

Karren prevented Humpal from taking the state title for the fourth year in a row.

In early rounds of the state tournament, Karren won over Julie Musacchio from Ponder, 6-0 and 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Karren played Hannah DeFriend from Groesbeck, winning 6-1 and 6-0.

Karren had beaten CC London’s Humpal earlier in the semifinals at regionals, 6-1 and 6-2.

After losing to Karren in the regional finals of girls singles, Humpal then beat Hannah Long from Lago Vista, 6-0, 6-0, in a play-back match to secure her return trip to state where she lost to Karren again.
