Track meet showcases best athletes around state

AUSTIN– It’s the biggest stage of the year.

Every student-athlete involved in track and field attempts to one day walk into Mike A. Myers Stadium for a chance to wear a gold medal.

And earn the title of state champion. Well for one Brush Country track star, that dream came true– again.

McMullen County’s Heather Gillin earned her second consecutive high jump state championship in Class 1A-Division II last week.

The Cowgirl competed with three other area athletes: Pleasanton’s Cassie Leal and Jourdanton’s Kaitlin Hindes and Enrique Lugo.

Three of the four competed in their events on Friday, which drew a smaller crowd than Saturday for obvious reasons.

The 20,000-seat stadium directly across the street from Darrel K. Royal Stadium on the impressive campus of the University of Texas is nothing short of spectacular.

It was my first state track meet and my expectations were quickly surpassed as I walked onto the track Saturday.

The buzz of the fans as the stadium announcer introduced athletes preparing to compete.

See I never was good enough to compete at the highest level in prep sports.

And I know I’m not the only one, so for the three area athletes that I watched in Austin– you are one of the best nine in the state.

Of course winning a state title as Gillin achieved is grand, but earning the opportunity to experience an event such as the state meet is irreplaceable.

Congrats on a fine season to each of the four Brush Country athletes!

And a special congrats to McMullen County’s Heather Gillin for claiming the state title.
