Juan Rosas Cortez, 72, of Odessa stepped into the arms of our Savior on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in Pleasanton. He was born on September 3, 1944 to Emeterio and Lasara Cortez in Terlingua.
He attended school in Ector County before enlisting in the United States Army. Juan served in the U.S. Army from 1964-1967, where he served in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged, and also received the Medal of Honor. Juan married the love of his life, Elizabeth Rios and had eight children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emeterio and Lasara Cortez; sons, Danny Cortez of Seagoville, Texas and James Cortez of Odessa, Texas; daughter, Ester Cortez of Odessa, Texas; brothers, Locadio, Santiago (Jimmy), and Evaristo Cortez all of Odessa, Texas; sisters, Ricarda Sotelo and husband Anacleto, of Wink, Texas, Maria Galvan and husband Luis, Paula Marquez, and Angela Alvarado and sister-in-law, Petraeus Cortez of Odessa, Texas.
Juan is survived by his children, Juan and Paula Cortez of Spring, Texas, Esteban (Steve) Cortez, Corina Cortez and Dominic Cortez of all Odessa, Texas, James Cortez of San Antonio, Texas, Edward Cortez and Jessica Cantu of Spring, Texas; 23 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Miguel Cortez and sister, Yolanda Hernandez and her husband Bobby of Odessa, Texas; brothers-in-law, Carlos Marquez and Manuel Alvarado of Odessa, Texas; sisters-in-law, Benita Cortez, Socorro Cortez and Patsy Mancha all of Odessa, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held at Hurley Funeral Home Chapel, Pleasanton from 2 – 8 p.m., Sunday, April 30. A graveside will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas at a later date.
