May was National Barbecue Month and the grills were sizzling on May 21-22 at the Jourdanton City Park. From barbecue to games to a silent auction, the 31st Annual Jourdanton VFD BBQ Cookoff offered food and fun with a competitive flair.
“This annual fundraiser provides training and equipment for volunteers so we can better serve the citizens of Jourdanton and residents of Atascosa County,” JVFD Captain Jeff Rankin said. “We appreciate and thank the sponsors and donors for donating to the event, the citizens for coming out to the event and the barbecue teams for weathering the storm.”

Winners in the Beans category were: first place- Jessica Kidd, J-Town Grillers; second place-Amber Forrest, Get Lit and third place-Tatum Watson, Second Hand Smoke BBQ and Grill.
Winners in the Chili category were: first place- Alan Moore, Rub It Out BBQ; second place-Jason Reyes, Pura Vida BBQ and third place-Amber Forrest, Get Lit.
First place in the Kids Que went to Braydn “Pork Chop” Ratliff. Kid competitors all had one hour to prepare and cook pork chops which were provided to them.
First place in the Margarita category was won by the team of Junior Bosquez, Ronica Bosquez and Benjamin Martinez. The Cook’s Choice award went to Payton Kight, Brandy Yarbrough, Amber Forrest, Misty Yarbrough and Ronda Savage.
Taking home first place in the Washer Tournament were Cory Smith and Junior Bosquez on Friday night. Saturday Cornhole Tournament winners were Mo M Rhadbane and Lisa Sanchez.
