Jourdanton tops Poteet in volleyball

Squaws beat Lady Aggies in four sets in Indian Gym, two teams will meet again in Poteet on Oct. 8

Poteet and Jourdanton met on the volleyball court at Indian Gym last Tuesday night. It ended up taking four sets before the Squaws came out victorious against the Lady Aggies.

Jourdanton raced out to an early lead in the first set and eventually won that set 25-13. The second set was more back-andforth, but Jourdanton was able to hold off the Lady Aggies for a 25-20 win.

After a quick huddle and instructions from their coaches, the two teams prepared for the third set. Jourdanton was looking for the sweep. Poteet needed to win the third set to prolong their visit to the county seat. It turned out that the Lady Aggies would stick around a little longer in Jourdanton after they won the third set 25-18.

The Lady Aggies would need to win the fourth set if they wanted a chance to even the match at two sets apiece. With their chance at the sweep being taken, the Squaws hoped to end the match in the fourth set and avoid a winner-takeall fifth set. The Fifth set went to the Squaws by a score of 25-20.

Poteet’s efforts against Jourdanton were led by Taryn Garcia’s 12 kills. Garcia also had eight assists and a block. Coral Rios led with 14 assists to go with two aces, two kills and a dig. Slone Martinez led the Lady Aggies with three blocks and Araceli Sanchez led the Lady Aggies with eight digs. Ella Shaver added three digs and both Elise Benavides and Amanda Gomez finished with two digs. Aniyah Pequeno finished with six kills, an ace, a block and a dig.

On Friday the Lady Aggies and Squaws continued their district schedule in different locales. Jourdanton traveled to Lytlefora5p.m.start with the Lady Pirates. Po- teet returned home to host Natalia.

Poteet fell to Natalia in three sets, 20-25, 15-25, 19- 25. Garcia again led with five kills, five assists and four blocks. Rios led with four assists and had two digs and a kill. Shaver had a team-high five digs and an ace. Sanchez added four digs and Pequeno finished with one dig and four kills.

Jourdanton continued their winning ways with a sweep of Lytle. The first set was back and forth. After the score was tied at 13 the Squaws closed out the first set on a 12-1 run to win 25-14.

In the second set the Lady Pirates had the lead early, but Jourdanton battled back with a 7-2 run to turn what was a 14-11 deficit into an 18-16 lead. The Squaws eventually claimed the second set with a 25-20 victory.

After they were unable to complete the sweep against Poteet last Tuesday, the Squaws made sure they completed it on Friday. Jourdanton scored first in the third set and never trailed on their way to a 25-9 win.

Last night Jourdanton traveled to Poth and Poteet hosted Cotulla. Results of those two games were unavailable at press time. This Friday the Squaws will take a break from district when they travel for a non-district game against Somerset. The game between the Squaws and Lady Bulldogs will begin at 6 p.m. Poteet will travel to Poth for a district game that is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
