Jourdanton sweeps Lytle, swept by Poth in recent volleyball games

The Jourdanton Squaws hosted the Lytle Lady Pirates last week Tuesday for a district matchup. Following previous wins the week before, the Squaws were eager to keep their streak alive as they opened set one. The first set saw nothing but straight dominance from the Squaws as they easily glided past the Lady Pirates 25-9.

The Lady Pirates showed a better performance in set two, but it didn’t help put them on top as the Squaws squashed them 25-11. Heading into set three, the Squaws set their sights on the chance of a potential sweep and did not disappoint, winning set three, 25-14, and sweeping the Lady Pirates.

McKinley West led the Squaws with nine kills, one ace and one block assist. Gwyn Wells finished with six kills, four aces, one block assist. Sophia Castillo added nine aces.

The Squaws also hosted the Poth Pirettes last Friday in Jourdanton in another key district matchup.

Set one showed dominance from the Squaws early on as they led 12-5 forcing Poth to call a timeout, but the Pirettes didn’t waver and came out on top from an intense first set 25-22. In set two the Squaws came out firing on all cylinders with Poth playing catch-up as the Squaws were leading 15-9 before Poth issued a timeout.

Much like the first set, Poth came out of the break dominant and came back to win set 2 21-25. Set three was a hard-fought match by the Squaws, but ultimately Poth wins the third set 16-25 sweeping the Squaws overall. West led the squaws with five kills, Macey Briones led with 12 assists and five digs.Gwyn Wells had four kills, two assists and nine digs.

Jourdanton hosted Hondo in a non-district game last night, but results were not available at press time.

The Squaws will host Cotulla in another district matchup this Friday in Jourdanton.
