Jourdanton FCCLA wins gold at National Leadership Conference

The Family Career and Community Leaders of America held its national leadership conference in San Diego, California, July 2-8. 

Over 8,500 delegates were in attendance for the “Empower—Mepower” themed meeting. Rita Lugo and Mrs. Edna Ulbrich, advisor represented Texas FCCLA in STAR Events.  Rita Lugo represented Texas FCCLA in the Illustrated STAR Event Junior Division. Rita presented a 10-minute speech based on research and developed creative props to illustrate her topic of Talk More Text Less. Rita won 1st Place in the Texas State FCCLA competition to qualify for national. Her hard work paid off in a Gold Medal at National, the highest honor possible. Over 4500 delegates competed in one of the National STAR Events at this leadership conference.

Texas FCCLA delegation was made up of 675 members consisting of region, state and a national officer as well as STAR Event participants. They were also recognized at the largest state affiliated with National FCCLA. The 47 state associations allowed for networking with other chapters as well as leadership workshops that empowered out FCCLA family. 

Nationally recognized speakers, workshops and networking did allow some time for exploring. The Texas delegation took an evening dinner cruise on July 4. They were able to view spectacular fireworks displays in the harbor. Other sites visited were the San Diego Zoo, Coronado, Sea Port Village and Mission Bay where went on a whale watching expedition. Although these made memories to last a lifetime, Rita crossing the stage was the most memorable event on the trip. Congratulations Rita Lugo for being the best in Texas and one of the best in the nation.

Family Career and Community Leaders of America, (FCCLA) is a youth leadership organization thats main focus is on the family. Members have a host of community service projects and projects that will impact future careers as well.  FCCLA is open to any student from 7th -12th as long as they are enrolled or have been enrolled in a Consumer Science Class.  These young people have opportunities for scholarships and to make a difference in our world today and tomorrow
