Jourdanton got their first win of the season on Friday night when they beat the Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks 30-21. The Indians trailed 21-6 at halftime before rolling off 24 unanswered points in the second half.
“It tested our pride a little bit,” Jourdanton Head Coach Darrell Andrus said. “It was a frustrating first half. The way this team ran off 24 straight points and our defense shutting them down, I couldn’t be more proud.”
The Indians got the ball to start the third quarter and cut the deficit to 21-14 with a 70-yard touchdown pass from Clyde Schuchart to Luke Tapp.
“We couldn’t get anything going in the first half,” Tapp said. “In the second half we got everything going.”
Tapp finished with 205 yards receiving. Schuchart threw for 242 yards on 13 completions. Juan Lerma was the Indians’ leading rusher with 114 yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns.
Lerma accounted for the touchdown that cut the deficit to 21-20 in the third quarter. The Indians went for two and converted to go up 22-21.
Jourdanton added another touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to give the game its final margin of 30-21.
The Indians now turn their attention to district play. Jourdanton opens district on Friday when they travel to Cotulla. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Meyers Memorial Stadium.
