JESSE SUMERLIN, JR.


 

 

Jesse “J.B.” Sumerlin, Jr., age 93, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, in San Antonio. He was born on March 4, 1928, in Karnes City, to parents, Jesse B. Sumerlin, Sr. and Lodemia Stevens. He proudly served in the United States Air Force during WWII as an aircraft mechanic. While stationed overseas in Guam he started cutting hair for the other members upon their request and realized his passion to become a barber. In 1953, he became a Mason and was a proud member of the Davey Crocket Lodge. In 1956, he opened J.B.’s Barber shop “We love children” where he served the Alamo Heights community for 60+ years. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 443 in Somerset. J.B. was quite the entertainer and enjoyed playing his guitar and singing for his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Michael L. Palmer. J.B. is survived by his wife, Norma Jean Sumerlin; son, Victor Sumerlin (Monica); daughters, Mary Ellen Jonas (David); Joan E. Ebner (Jimmy); and Gail Craft (Joe); son, Derrick Palmer (Amanda); daughterin law, Heidi Palmer; 16 grandchildren; 19 greatgrandchildren; sister, Beulah Jennings; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. The family received friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at Porter Loring Mortuary. The service will be Wednesday, June 9, at 10 a.m. also at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Ave. in San Antonio. Interment to follow at San Fernando Cemetery III. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital. For those who are unable to attend, his service will be live streamed on his obituary page.
