Jake Guerra



 

 

Jake A. Guerra was born on February 25, 1921 and entered eternal rest on May 3, 2013 at the age of 92.

Mr. Guerra was the oldest of 12 children born to Genaro and Romanita (Alvarado) Guerra. The family consisted of 11 sons and one daughter.

In July of 1940 he married the love of his life Celia Brown. Together they raised a family of four children, Jake Guerra Jr., Jacinto Guerra, Joe Luis Guerra and Elsie Guerra. Mrs. Guerra entered eternal rest on May 9 2004 after almost 64 years of marriage.

Mr. Guerra spent most of his life as a rancher and later retired as a driver for Atascosa County Pct. 2. He and his three sons enjoyed hunting with his coon dogs and spend many boys’ nights out chasing the dogs. Later in life he enjoyed horseracing and also owned a couple horses of his own. His only daughter Elsie trained the horses for him. He and his children enjoyed the good times but whether the horses won or lost or if the dogs had a successful hunt, they mainly treasured the quality time together. His biggest joy was family gatherings with wife, his children and grandchildren and left them all with a lifetime filled with memories.

He is survived by two sons Jake Guerra Jr. (Juanita), Jacinto Guerra (Janie) both from Poteet and one daughter Elsie Guerra (Lupe Escalante) and one daughter-in-law Senaida Guerra both from Pleasanton. He is also survived by two brothers Rudy Guerra Sr. (Ester), Domingo Guerra and one sister Elisa Garcia (Gume) all from Poteet as well as 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, three great-greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Guerra was preceded in death by his wife Celia Guerra, son Joe Luis Guerra, two grandchildren David Guerra and Jo Lynn Guerra and one great grandson Domingo Robles Jr. He was also preceded in death by his parents Genaro and Romanita Guerra, inlaws Joe and Tiburcia Brown, brothers Albert Guerra, Jesus Guerra, Manuel Guerra, Richard Guerra, Eloy Guerra, Alejandro Guerra, Henry Guerra, and Roger Guerra.

Serving as pallbearers are his six grandsons; Jake Guerra III, Ricky Guerra, Ernest Guerra, Joe Guerra Jr., Oscar Guerra and Jason Guerra.

Visitation was held at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton from 2 – 9 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7. A funeral service will be held at St. Phillip Benizi Catholic Church at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 8. Interment will be at Brown Cemetery, Rossville.
