J Garcia, Pleasanton photographer who is a member of the Pleasanton Fire Department, has won many awards with his critical scene photography.
His most recent recognition came at the State Firefighter and Fire Marshal Association (SFFMA) Convention in Arlington. One of his fire photos was chosen “Best of Show”.
SFFMA rotates their annual convention to a different region of Texas and different town each year.
Pleasanton Fire Chief Chuck Garris usually attends the entire convention while Garcia is there a day or two.
“Photos from all over Texas are submitted,” said Garcia. “There are three categories, life saving, fire related and education.” Garcia’s photo was in the fire related category.
Garcia has been taking photos for as long as he can remember, probably at least 30 years. “My father (Jack Garcia) got me into it when I was young and I just followed in his footsteps,” related Garcia. “I’ve been taking photos for the fire department for about 8 years and been a volunteer in the Pleasanton Fire Department for 3 years.
“I’ve been lucky that our Chief Chuck Garris and the rest of the volunteers have taken me in like they have and pretty much expect me to be out there taking photos while they do the dirty work. The real credit definitely goes out to them. I do get to fight fires and use the Jaws of Life now and then if they need me.”
“J is an integral part of the fire department. He spreads the word about the department throughout the state with his award winning photos,” said Chief Garris. “He’s always publicizing the department and getting the word out about the job we do. It’s greatly appreciated.
“A lot of time we don’t get the recognition for the benefits from what we do.
Due to J’s photos and his progression through the state firemen’s fire marshal’s association contests, he’s brought to light support of the fire department statewide, not just locally. And we do appreciate all of his efforts in getting these pictures and also during his response he does fight fires and works with the Jaws of Life.”
