On Wednesday, January 29, 2014, according to the San Antonio Police Officers Association (SAPDA) the Bexar County District Attorney Susan Reed announced that Shawn Ruiz Puente, 32, and Jenevieve Ramos, 28 were indicted by a grand jury in Atascosa County. The date for the trial has not yet been set, according to the Atascosa County District Clerk’s Office.
Puente and Ramos have been indicted for one count each of Capital Murder and one count each of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, in connection with the murder of San Antonio Police Officer Robert “Bobby” Deckard. Officer Deckard was pursuing Puente and Ramos on I-37 in a high speed chase in Atascosa County on December 8, 2013. Puente and Ramos were alleged suspects in a Southside San Antonio robbery. Allegedly, one of the pair shot at Deckard’s vehicle and struck him in the head. Deckard was transported to a San Antonio hospital; he passed due to his injuries on Friday, December 20, 2013. Puente and Ramos allegedly fled into Wilson County, where they allegedly initiated a fire fight between them and Poth Police Officer Robert Sanchez as they were abandoning their vehicle. Poth Police, the Texas Ranger, Atascosa County Sherriff’s Deputies, Wilson County Sheriff’s Deputies and other law enforcement agencies worked together to capture the pair in the morning of December 9, 2013.
If convicted, Puente and Ramos may face life in prison without parole or the death penalty, as determined by the jury.
SAPDA said that “These indictments are the result of a collaborative investigation that includes the Texas Rangers, Atascosa, Bexar, and Wilson County law enforcement agencies.” They added that Reed “pledged her assistance” to Rena Pena, District Attorney for the 81st Judicial District and served with him as co-counsel. SAPDA said that “a Wilson County Grand Jury is expected to return indictments against Puente and Ramos for Attempted Capital Murder of Poth Police Officer R.J. Sanchez.”
