Ida Smalling

Ida Pauline Smalling left to be with her heavenly father and husband on August 29, 2016.

She was born in Taylor, Texas on November 17, 1924 to Talbard and Josephine Sparkman, living in Waxahachie, Texas until they moved to San Antonio when she was young.

Pauline lived on Southcross with her mother and brothers Royal and William Sparkman, and graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1942, when 11th grade was as far as you went. During WWII in 1943, she met Lester W Smalling at the Church of Christ they attended.  He was in the Navy but had some family in the area. They kept in touch all the while he was on the USS Hornet in the Pacific. When he was on leave in August of 1945 they made plans to meet in San Francisco to marry at a small church. Being as they were not married they had to convince a hotel clerk to allow them to check into the same room. They married on August 10, 1945, having 70 years of marriage together. From that moment on they lived and loved the best way they could. After Wallace was discharged from the service they found themselves living on the Southeast side of San Antonio. Pauline and Wallace had two children. David Lee, born June 14, 1946, and Paula Evon, born November 11, 1950. Moving about a couple of times till they bought their first house on Rosebud and then Saipan, where their children finished school. Pauline started working as a Momma Patrol for Rayburn Elementary in 1954 and then ultimately became a secretary at the Administration office of Harlandale ISD, where she retired around 1975. By that time they were living happily on 30 acres in Seguin, Texas and attending the Walnut Street Church of Christ regularly. In 1998 they moved for the last time, relocating to Pleasanton, Texas to be closer to her daughter, granddaughter and great grandson. Pauline was an avid reader, sewed and did crafts for a hobby, and even enjoyed putting around on the web or playing computer games. Her interest were very wide which made her a well of information. If she couldn’t get a straight answer about something, she would go searching for that answer herself. She was also a member of the Pleasanton Church of Christ till her death.

Pauline is preceded in death by her parents Talbard and Josephine Sparkman, brothers Royal and William Sparkman and husband Lester W Smalling.

She leaves behind her son David L and Vickie Smalling of Sorrento, Fl, her daughter Paula Smalling Wood, of Pleasanton, Texas, grandson Beau Ellis, of Sorrento, Fl, granddaughter Misty M Stavinoha, of Pleasanton, Texas, and great grandson Christopher J. Stavinoha, also of Pleasanton.
