The crowd of spectators gathers expectantly around a ring set up in the middle of Main Street. Inside the ring, 1200 pounds of block ice drip slowly onto the pavement, as the steely-eyed competitors double-check their chain saws and various other tools of ice destruction. Then, the music blares, the chainsaws growl to life, and the ice chips start to fly.

Pleasanton’s first-ever “Icefights ” begins.

It’s a high-energy, interactive competition between two world-class ice sculptors, who carve the frozen blocks into unbelievable forms in just 45 minutes. Then, the audience gets to pick the winner.

The Icefights are part of the fun-filled Second Saturday Downtown Pleasanton Art Walk, Saturday, December 14th, 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The free event provides a mixture of family-oriented activities and South Texas culture, set amidst the ancient oaks and mercantile buildings of historic N. Main Street, between Johnson and Hunt. The monthly art walk series is sponsored by the Downtown Pleasanton Merchants’ Association (DPMA).

“The hallmark of each art walk is an exhibit or a performance by a featured artist,” said Ann Salas, DPMA co-founder and owner of Art on Main. “For December, we will feature the work of local folk artist Becky Carr, as well as the exciting performance art of our two ice sculptors, ‘Rowdy Ricky Rosario III’ and ‘Burr the Viking Rasmussen’, ” she added.

In addition to the Icefights, the festive day of activities will include live music by Jerry DeLeon and “Southbound”; arts and crafts vendors; a cookie contest with cash prizes of $75 and $50, plus $25 for most creative; creative kids’ crafts; and a bounce castle. “Blue Santa” will appear, choirs will sing carols, and food trucks will purvey their mouth-watering goods.

The schedule is as follows:

3:00 p.m. – Art walk begins

3:00 p.m. – Contestants turn in cookies for contest

4:00 p.m. – Cookie contest celebrity judging

5:00 p.m. – Icefighters performance
