Hoops For Hope

Pleasanton Lady Eagle Basketball Coach Katy Herrera would like to announce that the Hoops for Hope T-shirts are now on sale! The Hoops for Hope game against Poteet will be on Tuesday, Jan. 10, in Poteet.

The T-shirts sell for $15 each. Those interested in purchasing a T-shirt can go to the PISD Athletic Office and purchase it there. They will be selling them from Jan. 4- Jan. 18.

All proceeds made from this T-shirt will be going to the Rebekah Florez family to help with all expenses. Florez played for the Pleasanton Lady Eagles from 2007-2011. She tore her ACL her junior year and came back her senior year for basketball and played her heart out. She is the type of athlete any coach would love to have, never complains and gives 100 percent all the time.

Florez was diagnosed with Pilocytic Astrocytoma – a brain tumor on Sept. 14, 2011. Surgery was performed five days later, on Sept. 19. The surgery was three hours long.

On Sept. 22, she was transferred over to R.I.O.S.A – where she would be admitted for a month while going through intense therapy up to five hours a day, four days a week.

On Oct. 22, she was released to come home from R.I.O.S.A, but will continue to travel to San Antonio until February.

Her sister Shellie said that Rebekah has beat the odds. Surgeons believed she would be in a coma for a few days, may have some memory loss and would be paralyzed from her left side, but to everyone’s amazement she woke up within 30 minutes after surgery. She was able to recognize her family with no hesitation and is now re-gaining her strength on her left side.

“Rebekah is determined to make a full recovery, and with the support and prayers of family and friends, I believe it will happen,” added her sister.

In 2010, Rebekah Florez was named the Pleasanton High School Homecoming Queen.
