Baby Alex and his parents Clarissa and Anthony Martinez of Pleasanton are currently raising funds for Congenital Heart Defects through the Virtual CHD Walk for Hope.
In the past, the family decorated Alex’s wagon and walked at the San Antonio Zoo as part of the annual CHD Heart Walk. However, with the current COVID-19 pandemic, the family is fundraising online.
A Walk is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27 in which families can simply walk in their neighborhood to show support for this important cause. Nearly 1 in 100 babies are born with a CHD. Congenital heart defects are the #1 birth defect worldwide and the leading cause of all infant deaths in the United States.
You can join Baby Alex’s team and help the family meet their fundraising goal and win a yard sign. Visit the Facebook page called “Baby Alex’s CHD Journey” for the link to the Virtual CHD Walk for Hope.
The Pleasanton Express first featured Baby Alex in the Feb. 12, 2020 issue. He was born Aug. 5, 2019 and doctors later discovered he had mitral valve stenosis with regurgitation, a type of Congenital Heart Defect. He underwent two open-heart surgeries in San Antonio and then on Jan. 27, he received a heart transplant.
Alex’s mother Clarissa Martinez shares his journey on her blog “Baby Alex’s CHD Journey” on Facebook. She recently shared that her son is doing amazing.
“He loves to play, laugh and listen to music and eat snacks,” she wrote recently.
On Tuesday, Baby Alex had a biopsy done on his heart to check for rejection, which is standard procedure, but still difficult for Clarissa. She is thankful for the medical team and requested prayers for positive results.
The Martinez family will also celebrate Alex’s first birthday with a special online celebration on Sunday, Aug. 9 at 3 p.m. on Facebook Live. A Wish List has been put together on Amazon for Baby Alex.
“We are going to sing Happy Birthday and then let him have his smash cake,” said Clarissa Martinez.
They will also open Alex’s gifts live.
You can be a part of the event by going to “Alex’s 1st Birthday and Special Celebration” on Facebook.
